Front Range cold snaps can drop temperatures fast. Pipes in exterior walls, crawl spaces and garages are the first to freeze.
Before the first hard freeze
- Disconnect garden hoses and drain outdoor spigots.
- Shut off and drain irrigation lines.
- Insulate exposed pipes in garages, crawl spaces and unfinished basements.
- Seal drafts near pipes, like gaps where lines pass through exterior walls.
During a cold snap
- Keep the thermostat steady, even overnight and when you travel.
- Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls so warm air reaches the pipes.
- Let a faucet on an exterior wall drip on the coldest nights.
If a pipe freezes
If a faucet only trickles, the line may be frozen. Keep the faucet open and warm the area gently. Never use an open flame.
If a pipe bursts, shut off the main water valve right away, then call or text us. We answer 24/7. More on our leak detection and pipe repair service.
